There are so many gorgeous dogs and cats in need of a home that it is easy to get caught up with the cute factor. Take some time to think about what’s important to you in a pet. A little pre-thought will go a long way in ensuring a good fit for both parties. Please consider the following points to ensure you are “Adoption Ready”.
Why do you want a pet?
It is amazing how many people fail to ask themselves this simple question before they get a pet. Adopting a pet just because it’s “the thing to do” or because the kids have been pining for a puppy or kitten usually ends up being a big mistake. Don’t forget that pets may be with you for the next 10 to 15 years.
Do I have time to care for a pet?
Between puppy school, toilet training and general puppy behaviour a great amount of time and work is required. Puppies/Dogs need daily walks and stimulation. If you are time-poor, it may not be the best time to add a new pooch to your family. Kittens/cats don’t need the same time commitment as dogs but in addition to their basic needs they still require companionship and stimulation.
Am I allowed to own a pet where I live?
If you rent, you will need to ask your landlord for permission to have pets. If you live in an apartment that you own, you may need to check with a body corporate, or other relevant group, to make sure your apartment is pet friendly.
Can I afford a pet?
Bringing a pet into your home is a big commitment. Costs to consider include food, yearly registration, vet checks and possible veterinary bills, yearly vaccinations, regular worming and flea treatments, shelter (including ‘pet-proofing’ certain areas of the house and yard), grooming, bedding, and toys. Most of these costs are not a once-off, so you need to be prepared to budget for these costs all year round for the entire life of your pet.
Does owning a pet fit into my lifestyle?
It is important to take into consideration any plans you have in your short term and long-term future. If you have plans to travel for extended periods, it probably isnt the time to add a new family member.
